News & Updates – EP.01 | The Story Behind Litejam

WHO AM I?

Hi, I’m Bank Apisak , founder of Litejam.

I started learning guitar back in high school. At first, I just wanted to learn a few chords so I could sing and play with friends — nothing fancy. I picked up a basic guitar book and started from there.

Later, I decided to take formal lessons at a local music school. But on my very first day, the teacher had me play chromatic scales, over and over again — without any explanation.

I remember feeling totally confused.

“Why am I doing this? I didn’t sign up to play exercises — I just want to play chord songs and sing!”

But that was only the beginning.

Right after that, my teacher gave me an incredibly hard piece to learn — “Manhattan” by Eric Johnson. I had no idea what I was playing The chord shapes were strange, the picking patterns were difficult, and the whole thing felt way beyond what I could understand at the time.

It wasn’t what I expected at all.But something surprising happened.

Over time, I began to enjoy it. The more I practiced, the more I fell in love with soloing, phrasing and melody playing — not just rhythm chords. That early confusion and frustration actually laid the foundation for what became my passion: lead guitar and improvisation.

The Passion That Sparked It All

Even with the early challenges, I never lost my curiosity for guitar. One of the reasons I was so drawn to it was simple:

Guitar looked cool.

It made me feel confident. It gave me something to work on every day — and every time I improved, it boosted my self-esteem. I started to take it seriously.

I practiced regularly — not because someone told me to, but because I wanted to. Guitar became more than a hobby. It was my personal discipline, my creative outlet. I still remember how good it felt to finally play a song from start to finish and sing with friends. It gave me a sense of achievement and connection.

At the same time, I was deeply inspired by guitar heroes like Steve Vai and Vinnie Moore. I dreamed of playing like them — fast, expressive, and free. And then something amazing happened on the internet.

Around 2007, one of the most viral videos on early YouTube was released:

Canon Rock in D, performed by Funtwo, a guitarist from Korea. It was one of the first guitar solo videos to break millions of views — and I was hooked. Watching Funtwo shred through that iconic melody opened a new door for me.

It made guitar feel modern, global, and reachable. I remember thinking: “If he can do that… maybe I can too.”

The Struggles Along the Way

As much as I loved guitar, I also struggled — a lot.

I was hungry to learn fast, so I often turned to tab books and video tutorials. and memorized fret positions, but I didn’t really understand the music theory behind. They gave me quick wins, but over time, I realized something was missing.

I became too dependent on them and could copy songs, but I wasn’t really growing as a musician.

And that led to a long list of frustrating limitations:

  •  I couldn’t transcribe songs on my own — I always needed a reference
  •  I had to constantly check tab books or videos just to keep going
  • I only knew basic open chords — and anything beyond that was a mystery
  • If a song had advanced chords or unexpected key changes, I was completely lost
  • I didn’t know how to build or substitute chords in a progression
  • I couldn’t connect the patterns I was playing to the keys or scales they came from
  • My improvisation was stuck in just 3 comfortable keys: C major, G major, and D major — because they had fewer sharps or flats

It was frustrating because I knew there was more to guitar — but I couldn’t unlock it.

The tools I had didn’t guide me the way my brain needed.

The Turning Point: Imagine a Guitar That Shows You Everything

What if, instead of wasting time switching between PDFs, books, or tutorials, I could just see it all on the fretboard?

What if I could see every chord shape, every scale pattern, and every note in key, instantly?

That would let me focus on things that matter — like phrasing, licks, creativity — instead of worrying about finger positions.

And that’s when the idea for Litejam was born.

I imagined a guitar that could:

  • Visually show all chords and scales in real time
  • Help me understand theory by seeing the big picture
  • Let me improvise freely in any key
  • Shift my focus from “where do I put my fingers?” to “what melody can I create?”

Instead of feeling stuck and overwhelmed, I wanted learning to feel joyful — like jamming with a friend who lights the way.

I’ve been in the musical instrument industry for over 15 years, and guitar has always been the top-selling category in my business.

So I searched everywhere for a product that could solve this problem.

But what I found didn’t go far enough.

Sure, there were a few smart guitars with LED fretboards — but:

  • They used only one light color, which made it hard to distinguish notes, intervals, or finger positions
  • Most didn’t include features essential for real learning — like chord types, scale modes, or improvisation tools
  • And worst of all, the designs weren’t attractive or practical for serious players

They didn’t look or feel like guitars you'd want to bring on stage

For guitarists, feel, tone, and style matter deeply.

Especially the touch of the fretboard — it has to feel right in your hands.

“What if we made the first LED guitar designed for real players — with full electric tone, real performance feel, AND visual learning power?”

That’s when I made the decision:

“If I can’t find a guitar that solves this… I’ll build it myself.”

I imagined a guitar that combines sound, feel, and stage-worthy design with smart features built for real learners and real players.

That’s how Litejam was born.

 What Litejam Can Do

Litejam isn’t just a flashy gadget. It’s a fully playable electric guitar designed to help you learn faster, play smarter, and perform with confidence — no matter your skill level.

Everything we built into Litejam was designed to answer this one question:

"What does a guitarist need to see, feel, and control to improve every day?"

 Core Features:

 Chord Mode

Master chords visually and intuitively — not just by memory.

  •  50+ chord types, from major and minor to 7th, diminished, add9, sus4, and more
  •  Multiple positions and voicings across the neck
  •  Fingering guides with color-coded LEDs
  •  Build and save your own custom chords

Whether you’re learning your first barre chord or exploring jazz extensions, you’ll see exactly where to press, why it works, and how to move between shapes.

What if learning chords felt as easy as following GPS — lighting up exactly where to go ?

 Scale Mode

Explore the fretboard like never before.

  •  Choose from multiple scale types: major, minor, pentatonic, blues, modes, and more
  •  Highlight all scale positions in any key
  •  Instantly visualize notes that “fit” when improvising
  •  Great for learning phrasing, modes, and melodic ideas

With Litejam, you’ll finally understand the fretboard as a map, not a maze.

What if your guitar could guide you like Google Maps — showing every scale in any key so you can improvise in seconds?

 Perform Mode

Make your guitar part of your show.

  •  LED animations that move with your sound
  •  Choose reactive color effects or preset light patterns
  •  Great for stage performances or content creation
  •  Includes Chromatic Scale Practice — the foundational exercise for technique, speed, and fretboard familiarity

Perform Mode turns your fretboard into a stage — syncing sound with stunning light.

What if your guitar didn’t just sound great — but looked unforgettable on stage?

Tune quickly, clearly, and visually.

  •  Each string has its own color
  •  LED movement shows sharp/flat direction
  •  In-tune notes gently pulse with a soft glow

Forget squinting at tiny displays — Litejam’s tuner feels intuitive and fun.

Litejam connects bluetooth to a mobile app for full control.

  •  Choose modes, scales, and chords with a tap
  •  Save your favorite combinations as presets
  •  Get firmware updates for new features in the future

Whether you’re practicing scales or preparing for a performance, your fretboard stays in sync with you.

What’s Coming Next – The Future of Litejam

Litejam is just the beginning.

From day one, we didn’t just imagine a smart guitar — we imagined an entire ecosystem of creative tools, learning experiences, and instruments that grow with you.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s coming next:

 Game-Based Learning

Think Guitar Hero — but with a real guitar.

  • Practice chords and scales through interactive games
  • Embedded play modes that sync with your amp or screen
  • Level up your accuracy, speed, and ear without feeling like you’re practicing
  • Perfect for kids, students, or anyone who learns best through play

We’re bringing gamification into the heart of daily guitar practice.

 MIDI Integration

Unlock your guitar as a digital instrument.

  • Plug Litejam into your DAW as a MIDI controller
  • Turn scales and chords into any sound: synths, strings, beats, pads
  • Create film scores, lo-fi loops, or EDM tracks — all from your guitar
  • Play games and back tracks like Guitar Hero but on your own terms

Whether you’re a producer, content creator, or experimental player — MIDI opens new creative doors.

 Expansion to Other String Instruments

Visual learning doesn’t stop at 6 strings.

We’re already prototyping Litejam-style systems for:

  •  Bass Guitar – full LED fretboard support and visual rhythm training
  •  Ukulele – simplified interface for younger learners and schools
  •  And more in development

Imagine an entire Litejam family — each with built-in smart learning tools.

AI + Smart App Features (Coming via Updates)

  • AI-generated backing tracks for every scale
  • Smart lick suggestions based on your playing style
  • Ear training tools that adjust to your skill level
  • Personalized progress tracking and goals

Because the best instruments don’t just teach you what to play — they evolve with you.

Litejam isn’t just a product.

It’s a platform for the future of music learning and expression.

And this is just the beginning.

 What’s Been Challenging

Creating Litejam has been one of the most rewarding — and most difficult — journeys of my life.

As guitarists, we often judge gear by feel, tone, and looks. But behind the scenes, it takes hundreds of invisible decisions to bring something like Litejam to life.

We faced challenges on every level — but we never gave up.

 Hardware Development

Creating Litejam meant starting from the ground up — not just with ideas, but with real craftsmanship and real guitars. •

  • We had to design a full electric guitar from scratch — with the right weight, balance, and feel
  • Develop a low-latency LED system that lights up instantly without creating noise or affecting tone
  • Engineer the LED fretboard in a way that still feels natural under the fingers — without losing the smooth, responsive touch guitarists expect
  • Choose the right body materials, finish, fretwork, and pickup configuration to satisfy serious players, not just tech users
  • Find the right materials, finish, and pickup configuration that satisfy real players, not just tech users

But building something this unique wasn’t as simple as calling up a factory.

  • Most traditional guitar factories couldn’t build what we needed — the LED system, wiring, neck design, and embedded components all required custom processes
  • We had to work with multiple partners, sometimes combining separate factories for different parts of the build
  • Our team wasn’t just software engineers — we brought together guitar luthiers, pickup experts, sound designers, and user experience specialists to make sure Litejam feels like a real instrument first, and a smart tool second

Even a small change — like fretboard thickness or pickup placement — could affect everything from lighting visibility to playability and tone. Every detail mattered.

 Software & App Development

While building the guitar was already a big challenge, making the software and app experience feel seamless was just as complex — maybe even more.

We weren’t just making an app.

We were designing a visual learning platform that interacts with a real instrument in real time.

Here’s what it took:

 Embedded Firmware

  • We built a custom firmware system from scratch — no off-the-shelf solution could handle Litejam’s unique requirements
  • The firmware controls every LED on the fretboard based on user input, scale logic, and app commands
  • It had to be ultra-fast, stable, and responsive — any lag or flicker could ruin the learning experience

 Mobile App UX/UI

  • We designed the Litejam App to feel simple enough for beginners, yet powerful enough for advanced players
  • The app lets users select chords, scales, tunings, and modes — and immediately see the result light up on the fretboard
  • We spent months refining the user journey:
    • “How should someone select a key?”
    • “How do we explain modes visually?”
    • “How can we show finger positions without overwhelming the user?”

 Real-Time Communication

  • We developed a custom Bluetooth protocol to communicate between the guitar and the app with near-zero delay
  • All LED changes, tuning feedback, and preset data are synced in real time
  • The guitar responds instantly to any app setting — no delays, no guesswork

 Platform Integration

  • iOS, Android, and Windows all behave differently — so we had to write and test separate solutions for each platform
  • On top of that, our tuner mode interacts directly with the guitar’s signal, requiring deep optimization on both hardware and software ends
  • We also built in future-proofing so new features (like MIDI, games, or AI jam tracks) can be added later with firmware updates Algorithm Design & UX Logic

Litejam’s software is what transforms it from a guitar… into a learning companion.

We had to balance cost, quality, and experience again and again.

But we kept moving forward — because we believe Litejam can change the way people learn and love guitar.
